Squint

Squint

A squint, also known as strabismus, is an eye condition where both eyes do not move together in the same direction. One eye may turn inwards, outwards, upwards, or downwards while the other eye focuses normally. This misalignment can affect vision, depth perception, and eye coordination. In children, untreated squint can even lead to a lazy eye (amblyopia), while in adults it may cause double vision and eye strain.

Symptoms

If you have Squint, you may observe

Poor Depth Perception

Eye Strain or Fatigue

Head Tilting or Turning

Vision Problems

Vision screenings using adequate testing equipment.

Early diagnosis and treatment of squint are crucial to prevent vision problems and promote proper eye coordination. Treatment options may include eyeglasses, eye patching, vision therapy exercises, or in some cases, surgery to adjust the eye muscles and realign the eyes.

Treatments for Squint

Glasses. When a squint (strabismus) is linked to a vision problem such as long-sightedness, prescribing the right pair of glasses can often help correct the eye’s alignment. By allowing light to focus properly on the retina, glasses improve clarity and reduce the effort needed for the eyes to work together. This clearer, more balanced vision helps relieve strain on the eye muscles, making it easier for both eyes to point in the same direction and maintain proper coordination.

Eye exercises. Eye Exercises: In some cases of squint (strabismus), specially designed eye exercises can be recommended to strengthen the muscles that control eye movement and improve the way both eyes work together. These activities, often referred to as orthoptic exercises, are guided by an eye specialist and aim to enhance coordination, focus, and control of eye alignment. When practiced regularly, they may help reduce eye strain, support better binocular vision, and, in certain situations, minimize the need for more invasive treatments..

Surgery. When a squint (strabismus) does not fully improve with glasses or other conservative treatments, an eye specialist may recommend surgery to realign the eyes. This procedure involves carefully adjusting the position or length of the muscles that control eye movement, allowing the eyes to point in the same direction and work together more effectively. Squint surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia and is often combined with other treatments, such as glasses or eye exercises, to support lasting results and help restore comfortable, coordinated vision.

Injections into the eye musclesthese. In certain cases of squint (strabismus), injections can be used to temporarily weaken specific eye muscles, helping the eyes align more correctly. This approach can improve coordination between the eyes and reduce the appearance of misalignment. However, the effects of these injections are usually temporary, typically lasting less than three months, and repeated treatments or additional therapies may be needed to achieve longer-lasting results.
