Amblyopia

Amblyopia

Amblyopia, commonly known as lazy eye, is a vision disorder that occurs when one eye does not develop normal visual acuity, even with the use of corrective lenses. It is most commonly seen in children but can persist into adulthood if left untreated.

Amblyopia often arises from conditions that hinder clear vision in one eye, such as strabismus (misalignment of the eyes), significant refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism), or structural abnormalities. The brain tends to favor the stronger eye, leading to decreased visual stimulation and development of the weaker eye.

Symptoms

If you have Amblyopia, you may observe

Decreased Visual Ability

Poor Depth Perception

Squinting or Shutting One Eye

Struggling with Visual Tasks

Vision screenings using adequate testing equipment

Treatments for Amblyopia

Corrective eyewear. One of the primary treatments for amblyopia, commonly known as lazy eye, involves prescribing glasses or contact lenses to address underlying vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. By providing clear, properly focused images to each eye, corrective lenses help balance visual input, encourage the weaker eye to work more effectively, and support the development of healthier, sharper vision over time.

Eye patches. Another common treatment for amblyopia (lazy eye) is the use of an eye patch placed over the stronger eye for a set number of hours each day, usually between two and six or even longer, depending on the severity of the condition. By temporarily covering the eye with better vision, the patch encourages the weaker eye to work harder, helping to strengthen its visual ability and improve coordination between the two eyes. Although, in rare cases, wearing a patch for too long can lead to amblyopia developing in the previously stronger eye, this effect is typically mild and can be reversed once patching time is adjusted or stopped under an ophthalmologist’s guidance.

Bangerter filter. A Bangerter filter is a specially designed translucent filter that is applied to the eyeglass lens of the stronger eye as part of amblyopia (lazy eye) treatment. By gently blurring the vision in the stronger eye, the filter reduces its dominance, encouraging the weaker eye to become more active and develop better visual strength. This approach works in a similar way to an eye patch but is often more comfortable and less noticeable, making it an excellent option for children who may resist traditional patching.

Eyedrops. Another effective option for treating amblyopia is the use of atropine (Isopto Atropine) eye drops, which are placed in the stronger eye to temporarily blur its vision. By gently reducing the clarity in the dominant eye — often on weekends or sometimes once a day, as prescribed — these drops encourage the weaker eye to take on more visual work, helping it become stronger over time. Atropine therapy can be a good alternative for children who find wearing an eye patch difficult. Possible side effects may include light sensitivity and mild eye irritation, so it is important to follow the ophthalmologist’s instructions carefully and report any concerns promptly.

Surgery. In certain situations, surgical treatment may be recommended for children with amblyopia, especially when an underlying eye condition is blocking clear vision or affecting eye alignment. Procedures may include lifting droopy eyelids (ptosis surgery) or removing cataracts that cause deprivation amblyopia, allowing more light and images to reach the retina. If a child’s eyes continue to cross inward or drift outward despite wearing the correct glasses, an ophthalmologist may also suggest strabismus surgery to straighten the eye muscles. These operations are usually combined with other therapies, such as patching or corrective lenses, to give the best chance of restoring and maintaining healthy vision.
