Visual acuity test. A visual acuity test is a standard assessment used to measure the clarity and sharpness of your vision. During this test, each eye is evaluated separately while the other eye is covered, usually with an eye patch or occluder. The patient is asked to read letters or symbols on a chart, or through a device, starting with larger letters and progressing to smaller ones. This helps the ophthalmologist determine how well each eye can focus and distinguish detail, identify refractive errors such as nearsightedness or farsightedness, and plan appropriate treatments such as glasses, contact lenses, or cataract surgery.

Slit-lamp examination. A slit lamp is a specialized microscope that allows your ophthalmologist to examine the front structures of the eye in great detail. It uses a focused, intense line of light — called a slit — to illuminate areas such as the cornea, iris, lens, and the space between the iris and cornea. This magnified view enables the doctor to detect abnormalities, assess eye health, and identify early signs of conditions like cataracts, corneal injuries, or infections. Slit lamp exams are a key part of comprehensive eye care and help guide accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Retinal exam. A retinal exam allows your ophthalmologist to carefully inspect the back of your eye, including the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels, to assess overall eye health. Before the examination, special eye drops are applied to dilate the pupils, providing a wider view of the internal structures. Using a slit lamp or a handheld device called an ophthalmoscope, the doctor can also examine the lens for early signs of a cataract and evaluate whether it is affecting vision. This detailed assessment helps in diagnosing cataracts and planning the most appropriate treatment or surgery..

Applanation tonometry. This diagnostic test is used to measure the intraocular pressure (IOP) inside the eye, which is important for detecting and managing conditions such as glaucoma. During the procedure, a specialized device gently flattens a small part of the cornea to determine the pressure of the fluid within the eye. Multiple types of tonometers are available, including handheld and slit-lamp-mounted devices, allowing ophthalmologists to accurately assess eye pressure and monitor changes over time to prevent optic nerve damage and vision loss.
